Unless the parent actively engages to the point of annoyingness, the IEP wont be followed. If the child, like my dyslexic son, is shy and not the best advocate, his needs will go unmet. My son is bright and could have done well with AP classes, but they were “not able to provide a paraeducator” for AP classes. I know realize this is illegal, as he has the right to an equal education.
IEP are followed minimally, with minimal engagement with the student. IEP students are offered the watered down regular classes, instead of challenging AP classes.
Transition services are a check in the box, with no real engagement as there is no vested interest in the students future as long as they have checked the box and met the graduation box.
Springbrook unfortunately suffers along with most of the Eastbound County schools, there is a lack of resources and funding and a lack of caring. A lot of talk to closing the achievement gap, but all one needs to do is walk into any of the East County schools and compare them to the Bethesda/ Potomac schools and no there is absolutely no way students in these diverse, low socioeconomic schools have access to the same Montgomery County assets as the other higher socioeconomic schools on the other side of the county. No where is this more glaringly obvious than in the special education services, where is it sadly needed the most.
